Article Body

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has a proud tradition of outstanding athletics, with more than 30 student athletes recognized as All-Americans over the past three decades. This spring, two students joined their ranks when they received All-American honors from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Melanie Vedvei (IE, Lake Preston) was named to the NAIA Division II second team All-American basketball team. Vedvei, a 5-foot, 6-inch point guard was also recently named Dakota Athletic Conference player of the year and a first-team all-conference performer. Vedvei averaged team-highs of 19.44 points, 7.69 rebounds, 3.69 steals and 3.66 assists for the Lady Hardrockers.

"She’s just worked really hard for it; obviously she drew a lot of attention from conference schools," said head coach Barb Felderman. "I watched several of the (national tournament) games on the Internet and I think she can play with the best of them."

Shannon Hellman became the first Lady Hardrocker to earn Track and Field All-American honors at the NAIA Indoor Championships held in Johnson City, Tennessee. Hellman ran 8.75 in the finals of the 60m high hurdles to finish sixth. Shannon reached the finals by winning her heat in the first round with a time of 8.87 seconds and followed that with a fourth place finish in her semi-final heat with a school record time of 8.70 seconds.

Hellman capped a successful indoor season by going undefeated throughout the regular season in the high hurdles, winning the DAC high hurdle and 200m titles, and qualifying for the Indoor National Championships.

"We are very proud of Shannon. It’s not often that a freshman can earn All-American honors," head coach Jerry Schafer said. "Shannon has worked very hard and deserves much credit for her accomplishments."
