Iraqi Ambassador to the UN Speaks on Campus

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology was pleased to host His Excellency Dr. Hamid Al-Bayati, Iraqi Ambassador to the United Nations, on October 25, 2007.

Ambassador Al-Bayati, who was recently elected one of the Deputy Presidents of the UN General Assembly, discussed the history and culture of the Iraq and the region, life under the Hussein regime, and the current status of Iraq and its transition to a new government.

One of Al-Bayati's discussion points dealt with the portrayal of the conflict in Iraq.

"Contrary to reports, this is not a war between Sunnis and Shiites. Different ethnic groups lived for hundreds of years in this area peacefully," he said. "This is terrorists and extremists against moderates."

He noted that more than 70 percent of the Iraqi people voted in the last election, making the democracy currently in place a true government of the people, chosen by the people.

Al-Bayati also shared his personal experiences during the Hussein regime. He was imprisoned and tortured simply for attending the funerals of those executed by the former dictator. Three of his family members were executed and seven imprisoned, while others disappeared. "I am just one example of the many Iraqis who suffered," he said.

Despite the challenges Iraq has and will face, Al-Bayati is optimistic.

"The future is bright," he said. "Iraq will serve for peace and stability in the region."
