The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is pleased to announce the creation of the Edward W. Kiel Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established by in memory of Edward W. Kiel, a 1941 chemical engineering graduate of the School of Mines.
The scholarship was funded partially with a gift given to the SDSM&T Foundation from Kiel's estate and partially with contributions from Kiel's children, Merrily Lindquist, Marcia Stiles, Marlene Griffin and James E. Kiel. The Edward W. Kiel Memorial Scholarship is an endowed scholarship that will be awarded to a School of Mines engineering major at any level.
Kiel was born on November 8, 1918, in Cottonwood, South Dakota, the youngest of eight children. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the School of Mines in 1941 and was a member of Sigma Tau, a fraternal honor society for engineers.
Upon graduation, Kiel started a career with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company that lasted until his retirement in 1983. In 1973, Ed was honored with the prestigious Goodyear Spirit Award. He and his family lived in Akron, Ohio; Gadsden, Alabama; Jackson, Michigan; and Union City, Tennessee, during his 42 years with Goodyear.
