The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology joined with institutions across the nation in celebrating National Campus Sustainability Day on October 22.
A booth, located outside the Surbeck Center Ballroom, provided information, displays, and activities relating to recycling and alternative energy. Tthe School of Mines also hosted a webcast presentation, "Climate Realities, Challenges, and Progress in Higher Education." After the webcast, there was a raffle of a solar-powered model wind turbine, and the introduction of the campus "Paint the Recycle Bin" contest.
"An awareness of sustainable principles is becoming an important part of engineering and science curricula," Dr. Duane Hrncir, dean of the College of Science and Letters and the chair of the campus sustainability task force, said. "At the School of Mines we value active learning and the best way to incorporate these principles into our students' education is to practice sustainability as a campus."
