Researchers Awarded Grants Supporting Efforts at Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory
The South Dakota Board of Regents has awarded seven mini-grants, totaling $32,522, to faculty members across the state in support of efforts at the new Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (SUSEL), as they gear up to begin experiments at the 4,850-foot level of the former Homestake Gold Mine at Lead. Several School of Mines researchers received funding.

Professor Receives $1 million for Biomedical Materials Research
Dr. James Sears, director, Additive Manufacturing Laboratory, has been awarded $1 million for his "Biomedical Materials Initiative"(BMI). The grant is being funded through the United States Army Medical Command, Fort Detrick, Maryland, and will be focused on surface modifications of prosthetic devices to accelerate osteointegration.

Geology Professor Named the J. P. Gries Geologist of the Year
The South Dakota Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) announced today that Dr. Alvis Lisenbee has been named the 2008 J. P. Gries Geologist of the Year . The award is given each year by the Section in memory of Dr. John Paul Gries, a longtime professor of geology at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The 2008 award was presented to Lisenbee for his many contributions to our current understanding of Black Hills regional geology.

Professor’s Music and Ensemble Gain Recognition
Music is not usually the first thing that comes to mind when the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is mentioned. Those in the know are aware that Dr. James D. Lady Hardrocker Melanie Vedvei Breaks NAIA National Career Steals Record
The 5-foot-7-inch guard for the Lady Hardrockers recorded nine steals over the weekend during Dakota Athletic Conference action against Mayville State, North Dakota, and Dakota State, South Dakota, which pushed her grand total over the top for the NAIA national career steals record. So far in her four-year tenure at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Vedvei has 416 steals as a Lady Hardrocker. The old record, held by Joy Wilkinsen of Malone, Ohio, was 411 from 1999 to 2003.

Omnibus Bill Benefits School of Mines
The School of Mines will benefit from a consolidated or "omnibus" appropriations bill that was recently signed by the President. The funding package, which had the support of the South Dakota congressional delegation, combines 11 of the 12 appropriations bills that fund government operations and agencies for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2008.

Dr. Hao Fong Receives $750,000 EPSCoR Grant to Conduct Carbon Fiber Study
Dr. Hao Fong, assistant professor of chemistry, has been awarded $750,000 by the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA). The award, funded through the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), begins September 1st, 2007 and continues over a period of three years.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Team Finishes Second
The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) team tied for second place at the International Aerial Robotics Competition held at Fort Benning, Georgia. The team took first place in the 2006 competition. The team tied with Virginia Tech in the mission, finishing behind only Georgia Tech.

Darrell Sawyer Named SDCPPA President
Darrell Sawyer, director of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Career Center, was elected president of the South Dakota Career Planning and Placement Association (SDCPPA) at its recent annual meeting in Chamberlain. Sawyer will serve a two-year term from 2007-2009.

Research Funding More than $17 Million for Fiscal Year 2007
School of Mines researchers and professors received more than $2 million in research and development funding during June 2007. This puts the current 2007 Fiscal Year total at more than $17 million, a more than $3 million increase over FY06.
