School of Mines Welcomes Director of CAPE Lab -- Released June 6, 2006

Article Body
The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is pleased to welcome Dr. Perry Marteny as the director of the Composite and Polymer Engineering Laboratory (CAPE).

Marteny received a bachelor's degree in physics and a doctoral degree in polymer science from the University of Akron. Before joining the School of Mines, he was engaged in applied polymer research and development at Allied Signal, Goodyear Tire and General Cable Corporations. In addition, he spent many years teaching part time as adjunct faculty for the physics department at the University of Akron.

Marteny's research has focused on the viscoelastic response of polymeric materials and composites to stresses and strains. He is particularly interested in the interaction of materials at interfaces, response to impact loading and life cycle behavior modeling.

As director of the CAPE Lab, Marteny is responsible for drafting research proposals to obtain competitively awarded grants to fund CAPE Lab activities; supervising academic and research activities of students, faculty and research staff; soliciting and securing significant collaborative interactions with faculty, governmental and industrial partners; and broadly disseminating laboratory activities and research results.
