The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology's 2008 Senior Design Fair will feature dozens of senior projects from various fields of engineering and science. The event, free and open to the public, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. Projects on display will include fire protection systems, automated cookie decorator, robotic window washers, several vehicles, steel bridge, unmanned aerial vehicle, human powered vehicle, aero design, robotics, formula SAE, mini baja, and many, many more.
This campus-wide celebration of technical design showcases projects from more than 300 students from most engineering and science department departments. Some of the projects are sponsored by private industry and government agencies.
"This fair highlights some of the incredible capabilities of our students and of this school," Butch Skillman, mechanical engineering assistant professor and director of the Office of Technology Transfer, said. "We have projects here that have the potential to significantly improve the world we live in. Several of the projects have won state, regional, national and even international engineering competitions."
The design method is critical to technological advancement. It is the creative process used to develop a products and processes that address customer needs. Understanding and utilizing the design method are important components of engineering and science education.
The Design Fair provides an opportunity for the general public to see the results of School of Mines students applying the creative process in engineering and science projects. Student designers will be on hand to explain their projects. Middle and senior high school students are particularly encouraged to attend.
