Professor Elected to Research Council -- Released April 21, 2009

Article Body

Dr. Andrea Surovek, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, was recently elected to the executive committee of the Structural Stability Research Council (SSRC) for a three-year renewal term.

SSRC was founded in 1944 and offers guidance to specification writers and practicing engineers by developing both simplified and refined calculation procedures for the solution of stability problems and assessing the limitations of these procedures. The membership of the Council is made up of representatives from government agencies, international organizations, private corporations and educational institutions concerned with specifications and design procedures for metal structures, representatives of consulting firms engaged in engineering practice, members-at-large selected from universities and design offices and corresponding members from various countries who are in touch with stability research for their region.

Surovek has previously served the SSRC from 2004- 2009 as the chair of TG-4, the task group on frame stability; as member and as chair of the nominating committee; and as a jury member for the Vinnakota Award presented by the Council. She was also the recipient of the Council's Vinnakota Award in 2001.
