Article Body

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology's student chapter of the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) will host a Rock ID and Swap Saturday, March 21. The event will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the Museum of Geology, located on the School of Mines campus.

This event will include several activities:

  • Rock (and Fossil) Identification: anyone from the community may bring in their unknown rocks or fossils and SEG volunteers will identify them
  • Rock Swap: Perhaps you are bored with the rock you found in your backyard? Come in and swap it with rocks donated by others, such as pumice or granite from the Rocky Mountains
  • Make Your Own Pet Rock: An activity for the younger audience!
  • Rock Display: View a display of rocks from across the U.S. and the world that SEG members have collected
  • Raffle: For a chance to win a piece of the legendary Homestake ore, a beautiful sample of iridescent sphalerite or an intriguing dolomite with small crystals of sphalerite and chalcopyrite, purchase a ticket for only $1

The event is free and open to the public. For questions please contact Samantha Saxton, SEG vice president, at (612) 418-8495 or samantha.saxton@mines.sdsmt.edu
