73 Employers to Attend School of Mines Spring Career Fair -- Released February 9, 2009

Article Body

Seventy-three employers from around the country will be on the South Dakota School of Mines campus Tuesday, Feb. 10, to recruit School of Mines students for full-time employment and for internships. The Career Fair will be held from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the Surbeck Ballroom and South Lounge area.

Seventy-three employers are scheduled to attend, an impressive group of employers especially in view of the current economic recession. A list of employers scheduled to attend can be found at http://sdmines.sdsmt.edu/careerfairdirectory.

The 73 registered employers represent 19 states and include 20 South Dakota exhibitors as well as others that have operations in South Dakota but are based elsewhere.

"Students here have had hands-on experiences with projects, internships, co-ops — a well-rounded package to offer employers," Darrell Sawyer, director of the Career Center at the School of Mines, said. "The large number of employers registered for our spring career fair demonstrates that there is still a strong interest by industry in hiring our students. The long-range outlook remains strong for careers in engineering and science."

The average starting salary offer received by last year's School of Mines graduates was $55,759. The fact that 75 percent of graduates have relevant work experience through co-ops and internships increases their marketability to employers. The School of Mines offers 16 undergraduate degrees in engineering and science. All undergraduate programs emphasize advanced science and math, and all combine classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory work.
