  • April 11, 2008Signs of spring are everywhere across camp save for the impact of ever present South Dakota weather. • March 14, 2008As I write, the campus is thinning out, reflecting the beginning of our spring break—somewhat misnamed this year given the possibility of snow this weekend. Nonetheless, the week provides a much needed break from the busy routine, marking the halfway point to the end of the semester, and argues that all things spring-like are just around the corner. • September 28, 2007The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has been named one of America’s 100 Best College Buys for the 10th consecutive year. School of Mines graduates command placement rates in excess of 95 percent and average starting salaries of approximately $54,000. Posted by Vickie Bender on 9/28/2007 3:45:00 PM
  • September 14, 2007The fall semester is well underway at the School of Mines, and we are pleased to welcome our new and returning students to campus. This year marks the second year for our freshmen to participate in our tablet pc program. The program is an overwhelming success; however, with that success, also comes new challenges. An unanticipated increase in the number of upper-class students interested in participating in the program generated a shortage in tablets. Our IT department quickly located additional tablets and placed an emergency order. By the end of the day, we should have everyone ready to “log on”. Posted by Vickie Bender on 9/14/2007 3:45:00 PM
  • August 31, 2007It is hard to believe that today is the last day of August, and that classes will begin next Tuesday, September 4th. The School of Mines’ administration, faculty, and staff are busy preparing to welcome our students to campus for the fall 2007 semester. Posted by Vickie Bender on 8/31/2007 3:45:00 PM
  • August 17, 2007With mid-August upon us, thoughts and activities—though not necessarily the weather—are building toward the opening of the fall semester. There are telltale signs across campus. The fall sports teams—men’s football and women’s volleyball, have returned and begun season practice. Residence hall staff are arriving this weekend for training. The summer’s capital construction projects—renovations to locker rooms and construction of skyboxes at O’Harra Stadium/Dunham Field, site preparation for mobile Paleo laboratories, renovation of the mining department lab, and renovations to the Tech Transfer Office—are about completed. • July 13, 2007It’s been an exciting week with the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) announcement of their selection of the Homestake mine in Lead as the site of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). The site, now officially known as the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory or “SUSEL”, will provide scientists with unlimited research potential. While there are many steps remaining, the selection announcement is a significant milestone in the future of the lab. Dr. William Roggenthen, Professor of Geological Engineering at the School of Mines, was co-PI of the project along with Dr. Kevin Lesko of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. We owe a debt of gratitude to these gentlemen, our Congressional delegation, Governor Rounds, T. Denny Sanford, and the many, many individuals who worked tirelessly on this project and are continuing to do so. Posted by Vickie Bender on 7/13/2007 3:45:00 PM
