Oglala Lakota College Teams with School of Mines and SDSU to Train Future Engineers
The three institutions have recently been awarded a major cooperative grant from the National Science Foundation in an educational experiment titled "OLC / SDSU / SDSMT Pre-Engineering Education Collaborative" (OSSPEEC). The new cooperative program is designed to attract more Native American students into engineering fields.

Steel Bridge Team Headed to National Competition
The School of Mines student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) finished in second place overall at the 2011 ASCE Rocky Mountain Regional Conference, hosted at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. More
  Conference Free for Mines Participants
School of Mines will host the Green Energy and Sustainability Conference on Friday, April 15, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come learn about the science of sustainability. Cost is $99 per person, but SDSM&T participants attend free with registration. Congrats, Math Majors!
John Myers and Michael Snyder represented the School of Mines at the Mathematical Association of America's William Lowell Putnam Competition. Myers and Snyder placed in the top 50.8 percent and the top 18.5 percent, respectively. The competition attracted more than 4,000 college students.

Congrats, IE Majors!
Loryn Schuetzle and Leah Drummond placed third and fourth respectively in the North Central Regional IIE Student Paper Competition this weekend at Iowa State University. More than 200 industrial engineering students and faculty competed.

Antimatter and Thunderstorms
The Department of Atmospheric Sciences seminar series will host Emily French, atmospheric sciences graduate student, as she presents "Antimatter and Thunderstorms" on Tuesday, April 12, at 3 p.m. in Room 320, Mineral Industries Building. Contact Connie Crandall for more information.

Dating Safe?
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Campuses Community Wellness Coalition, STEPS, and the School of Mines Counseling Department are teaming up to present sexual assult views by law enforcement, prosecution and victim advocacy on Wednesday, April 13, at 6 p.m. in Room 204 West, Classroom Building. Plan for Your Future
The South Dakota Retirement System will be available to meet with you on Wednesday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. Presentations will include: SDRS/SDRS Supplemental and Special Pay Plan, Social Security Administration, DSS/Division of Economic Assistance Long Term Care and Parnership and the Office of the Attorney General Division of Consumer Protection. The Geology, Geological Engineering and Paleontology seminar series will host Mark Fahrenbach, Ph.D., South Dakota Geological Survey, as he presents "Mining in the Black Hills" on Friday, April 8, at 3 p.m. in Room 222, Mineral Industries Building. The Department of Mechanical Engineering will host the President of American Society of Heating, Refridgeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Lynn Bellenger, P.E., as she presents "Modeling a Sustainable World" on Monday, April 11, at 11:30 a.m. in the Surbeck Center Ballroom. Want to Recruit Future STEM Majors?
School of Mines is preparing for the 2011 South Dakota Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduates Program (SD GEAR UP). Attend an information session on Tuesday, April 12, from 2-4 p.m. in the McKeel Room, Surbeck Center, to learn how you can help recruit more students into science, technology, engineering and mathematics majors. Ameet Pinto, Ph.D., University of Michigan, will be on campus as a guest of Jennifer Benning, Ph.D., assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering. Dr. Pinto will deliver a seminar titled "Sustainable Waste Management: Waste as a Resource" on Wednesday, April 13, at 4 p.m. in Room 328, Classroom Building.
