School of Mines to Celebrate Earth Day -- Released April 18, 2008

Karen Hall, environmental engineer and a 1991 graduate of the School of Mines, will kick off Earth Day with a 40-minute "lunch and learn" program at 12 p.m., Tuesday, April 22 in the McKeel Room in the Surbeck Center. The public is invited to hear her presentation about the proposed oil refinery in eastern South Dakota.

The senior student design fair, displaying dozens of interesting design projects, will be shown in the Surbeck Ballroom and the public is welcome.

The Journey Museum will host Walkin' Jim Stoltz's presentation of "Forever Wild." Stoltz, an avid environmentalist, has walked 26,000 miles on plant Earth and presents a free program of photos, music and stories.

Earth Day will continue on Saturday, April 26. Several student groups have organized clean-up projects at Rapid Creek and a hill on Kansas City Street. Crews will go out every hour starting at 9 a.m. Litter pick-up equipments is available at the Surbeck Center.

An Earth Day Fair will be held in the Surbeck Center ballroom from 2-9:00 p.m. Booths will include the Audubon Society, Sierra Club, Norbeck Society, Environment Club, Democracy in Action, The Humane Society, Prairie Dog Coalition, Friends of Sand Creek, Izaak Walton League, Organic Food display and more. Other activities include a nature photo show from the Black Hills Photographic Society will have a Nature photo show and children's activities including planting seeds.

There will be a number of discussion panels. The panels include:

 2:30 p.m.        Karen Hall - " Reduce, Reuse, Recycle."

3:15 p.m.         Shirley Frederick -  "Uranium Mining in South Dakota"

4:00 p.m.         Jim Petersen -  "Keeping Rapid City Water Clean!"

4:45 p.m.         Philip Bangs - "Wind & Solar Power, net metering"

All events are free and open to the public.
