School of Mines Student Recipient of Prestigious Internship -- Released December 10, 2007

Connie Giroux, a South Dakota School of Mines and Technology graduate student majoring in technology management, complete a prestigious internship at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif. in summer 2007.

During her internship, Giroux worked in the in the Mission Assurance Office. The work she conducted included assessing the identified risks for the Mars Science Laboratory Project and the Aquarius Project as well as reviewing risk management plans for each of these projects. Giroux also reviewed the risk management plans for the EMOS Project, and attended risk management meetings for all three projects. She also assisted in the development and testing of a new database entry system.

The goal of this summer internship was to help assess the effectiveness of the risk management process in understanding and mitigating problems, concerns, and risks. Comparison of the observed effective measures will be used to develop recommendations for uniform implementation standards across all of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory processes.

Giroux will graduate this December with a master's in technology management, and is consider pursuing a doctorate degree.
