School of Mines Announces Ralph Hurlbert Scholarship -- Released November 27, 2007

Article Body
The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is pleased to announce the creation of a new effort to help students fund their college education: the Ralph Hurlbert Scholarship.

The Ralph Hurlbert Scholarship is to be awarded to female students majoring in metallurgical engineering at the School of Mines. Freshman recipients must have achieved high scores on entrance exams (i.e. ACT). Sophomore, junior and senior recipients must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average (based upon 4.0 = A) and be making satisfactory progress toward completion of a metallurgical engineering degree from the School of Mines. The goal of the Ralph Hurlbert Scholarship is to increase the number of female metallurgical engineering graduates.

The scholarship fund was established by Tami (Huisenga) Nelson, a 1986 metallurgical engineering graduate, to show her support of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Foundation Building the Dream capital campaign. She has chosen to name the scholarship in honor of her high school chemistry and physics teacher, Ralph Hurlbert. Hurlbert positively influenced Nelson's life with his creative teaching, support and encouragement.

Nelson joined Caterpillar Inc. in June of 1986 and has held several positions with them, rising quickly through the ranks. Currently she serves as general manager of operations in Australia.
