Dear Friends,

Congratulations to our CAMP (Center for Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing and Production) teams who recently competed in various competitions both here locally and across the country. Thank you to those companies and individuals who donated their time and money to make sure that our students were able to participate in these competitions and events.

More than 100 national and international teams competed in the SAE 2007 Mini Baja West competition held last weekend in Rapid City. I am pleased to report that the School of Mines underclass team finished in seventh place, and the senior team finished in 11th place overall. http://sdmines.sdsmt.edu/pressreleases/2007April/mini-baja

The Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) team placed 1st in design and 4th place overall at the 2007 West Coast Human Powered Vehicle Challenge held last month at the NASA-Ames Research Center.

This Sunday marks the opening of the 15th annual 2007 GEAR UP Honors Program. For the next six weeks, the School of Mines will host more than two-hundred, 9th-12th grade American Indian students and several college students for this residential program designed to prepare students to be successful in the college setting. Program Director, and School of Mines Alumna, Stacy Phelps, a 1996 mechanical engineering graduate of the School of Mines, has been involved in this program since its inception and was honored as a School of Mines Outstanding Recent Graduate in 2003. If you would like more information on this program, or would like to get involved, please contact Dr. Carter Kerk at 394-6067 or carter.kerk@sdsmt.edu or Bruce Carter at 394-1828 or brucecarter@sdsmt.edu.

I received word yesterday from Track Coach Jerry Schafer and Sports Information Director Brad Blume that the Hardrocker track team finished their season at the NAIA National Outdoor Track Meet with strong results. The Hardrocker team brought home the second ever national title in the history of the program and scored two more All American honorees. Congratulations to the coaches and athletes for your dedication and strong performances.

Summer camps and classes are filling up fast! We are offering a variety of day classes, day camps, and residential camps this summer, which help kids learn science and technology in fun ways. Four weeks of engineering camps are already full, but we do have room in our Leadership & Democracy Camp, Computer Science Camps, and Space Adventures Camps. For a complete list of youth programs and to register, please visit http://www.sdsmt.edu/learn/youth or call Educational Programs at (605) 394-2693.

As always, I welcome your thoughts and comments. I can be reached at charles.ruch@sdsmt.edu.
